By law” (in Belarusian “ПРАЗ ЗАКОН”) is the fourth instalment of the series of artistic interventions under the name “SUPLEMENT” – addressing difficult migration situations. It is an art project using various media (such as objects, video projections) by Lesia Pcholka and Uladzimir Hramovich, a pair of artists and social activists from Belarus. In 2020 and 2021, the artists participated in the largest protests in the history of Belarus, as a result of which they were detained and imprisoned. After their release from prison, they left for Poland in search of a safe place to live.

The title of the work ‘By law’ (in Belarusian, ‘ПРАЗ ЗАКОН’) illustrates the complicated administrative path the authors have to follow in order to be able to get married as immigrants from Belarus.

What does marriage mean in our rapidly changing world and what role do the people we meet play in the process? – ask the creators of ‘By law’, while inviting them to search for answers together.

‘When emigrating, a person finds themselves in a new world, you could say they start a new life’ the artists comment. ‘We survived unjust political processes in Belarus. At every stage of obtaining permission to get married in Poland, we encountered numerous difficulties. This experience is reflected in the works we have created’.

On 10 December 2022 (Saturday), from 17:00, we invite you to the opening of the presentation and a conversation with its creators, Lesia Pczołka and Uladzimir Hramovich, hosted by cultural animator – Alicja Jelińska. Entrance to the permanent exhibition on the basis of a free ticket – to be collected at the ticket office. Last entry to the permanent exhibition at 19:00.

“SUPLEMENT” is a curatorial series of exhibitions of works by visual artists, addressing the issue of assimilation in the migration process. As part of the series, three artistic interventions will take place over the course of several months, which will be temporarily integrated into the content of the permanent exhibition of the Emigration Museum in Gdynia.

– The artists and their work invited to the project make it possible to incorporate themes that, for various reasons, could not appear in the main narrative of the permanent exhibition. They analyze the cracks and fissures in the official story of migration, searching for and representing topics and phenomena that are overlooked, marginalized or excluded – says project curator Maksymilian Bochenek.
