The vernissages of the new temporary exhibition – „Poles in the Canadian mosaic. 150 years of history” were held on June, 29 at the Embassy of Canada in Warsaw and July, 1 at the Emigration Museum in Gdynia.

The vernissage at the premises of the Canadian Embassy in Warsaw was one of the events accompanying the celebrations of the 150th birthday of Canada. Poles had a huge contribution both to the history and the present of the Maple Leaf Country. That is why many people deeply interested in the issues of the Polish emigration and, not infrequently, directly affected by emigration to Canada, came to see the vernissage. They were Polish emigrants, Polish Canadians and their families as well as members of Polish organizations in Canada, and representatives of Polish scientific institutions in Canada.

The vernissage held on July, 1 at the Emigration Museum was also a great event. One and a half years of studies and searches, two study visits to Canada, hundreds of photos, meetings and vast quantities of obtained historical data. It is the success of the researchers and historians of the Emigration Museum in Gdynia as well as the scientists of the institutions cooperating with the Museum on the exhibition arrangement. The whole project would not have been set up without the valuable support received from the Embassy of Canada in Warsaw, as well as without the substantive support from Professor Anna Reczyńska from the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora Studies at the Jagiellonian University and Ph.D. Michalina Petelska from the Institute of History at the University of Gdansk.

Starting with the times of the settlement on the prairies, the construction and development of cities and infrastructure, through the exile of the dissentients in the „Solidarity” times to the present – life in Canada, all of this can be seen in several venues: in the Embassy of Canada in Warsaw, in the Emigration Museum in Gdynia and in a dozen places throughout Canada – at the beginning, from July, 6 in Hamilton, one of the most important centers of the Polish community in Canada.

The results of the search have exceeded our wildest expectations! A few hundred people – Polish Canadians, Polish emigrants and their families came to the vernissages in Warsaw and Gdynia. The exhibition comprehensively presents the issues of the emigration to Canada, whose history is closely connected with Poland. The history of Canada is also 150 years of Polish emigration. „At the Emigration Museum in Gdynia we connect these stories” – says Sebastian Tyrakowski, the Deputy Director of the Emigration Museum in Gdynia.

The exhibition „Poles in the Canadian mosaic. 150 years of history” can be visited until December,15 2017.

THE ACCOMPANYING PROGRAMME:

Educational workshops for children – the participants will learn the curiosities of the Maple Leaf Country.

Titles of the workshops: „In the Canadian Forest”, „The Adventures of One Postage Stamp”, „On a World Cruise, on a Liner” and many others.

The workshops are dedicated to children aged 6-11 and their parents.
