On Wednesday, March 8, 2013, at 7 pm, in the lecture hall of the Faculty of Navigation of theMaritime University on Aleja Jana Pawła II no. 3 in Gdynia, this year’s second meeting of the ‘Gdynia on the Big Screen’ cycle will be held. The March meeting will be dedicated to the maritime icon of Polish overseas trips: MS “Batory”. Due to the emigration aspect of the “Ocean liner”, the event is co-organized by the Gdynia Film School with the participation of the Emigration Museum in Gdynia.
MS “Batory” – the most magnificent Polish ocean liver – was an embassy and a hub of Polish culture. Extremely interesting, professional as well as amateur, film material will be presented, documenting – among others – “Batory’s” christening and launch (1935), the maiden voyage to New York (1935), post war voyages to Norway (1953) and India (1954). The “With Batory to Poland” documentary film (1959) by Franciszek Fuchs and Ludwik Perski will also be presented. It gives an account of a journey from Montreal to Gdynia. We shall see unique scenes from the lives of passengers and crew.
Marek Twardowski – the custodian of the museum ship “Dar Pomorza” – will be the guest of the meeting.
GDYNIA ON THE BIG SCREEN is a cycle of thematic meetings addressed to the inhabitants and the aficionados of the history of the city. The goal of this project is to publically premier the little-known and unpublished archive film materials, chronicles and fragments of documentary and feature films related to the history of Gdynia.
Screenings are preceded by meetings with audience, lectures and discussions prepared by the author of the project – Marcin Borchardt of Gdynia Film School, journalist, director, screenwriter, as well as invited guests – historians, and experts on the city.
This year’s plan for the realization of the Gdynia on the Big Screen project includes five open thematic meetings with participation of audience. The next one, dedicated to Gdynia in promotional and advertisement films, will take place in April.
