On 18th December the inhabitants of Gdynia and the foreigners who live there will celebrate the International Migrants Day together at the Emigration Museum. It will be a fantastic chance to learn an Ethiopian dance, listen to Ukrainian songs, taste traditional dishes and – above all – meet people from all over the world and talk to them. Free admission!
They came from Ukraine, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Ethiopia, Nigeria, India and China. Some have lived in Poland for a few months and some have been here for years. They study at the Tricity universities, work as volunteers or are hired by NGOs, shipyard companies, cultural institutions, care centres, etc. On 18th December – on the International Migrants Day – at the Emigration Museum you will get to know more about their stories.
Apart from the occasion to meet the migrants, talk to them and taste traditional dishes, the 18th December will also be a chance to learn an Ethiopian dance and listen to Ukrainian songs. Families are especially welcome to the presentation of Jak Dwie Krople Wody (Like Two Drops of Water) children’s story which will be read aloud. Afterwards, there will be art workshops for children and a meeting with a psychologist for the parents, at which they will find out how to talk to their kids about being different and multiculturalism.
The documentary will present people who have found their new homes in our city and highlight the reasons why they left their homes. The international group, which participated in the theatre workshops by the Strefa WolnoSłowa Foundation will present a performance on the widely understood theme of migration.
The December event is the culmination of the Multicultural Gdynia – Tradition of Hospitality project which allowed immigrants who live in Gdynia to get to know the Gdynia community better. For several months the foreigners perfected their language skills and got more familiar with Gdynia as well as Polish culture during workshops and walks. Together with Poles, they have planned the programme of the International Migrants Day, which presents different faces of the city.
