Autumn is not only a time for going back to school but also a good time to visit a museum. It is with children and teenagers in mind that we have prepared our rich educational offer. The classes will focus on issues related to history, the Polish language and awareness of culture and society. The unique space offered by the port and the historic building of the Marine Station will certainly help in grabbing the attention of the most demanding pupils.
The classes have been prepared in co-operation with Tri-City teachers and in line with the curriculum in kindergartens and schools. The offer spans all levels of education, from pre-school up to secondary school level. All classes focus on developing the social, cultural, digital or civic skills of pupils visiting the Museum.
The youngest will have a chance to discover various modes of transport and learn about methods of travel then and now. Slightly older children will learn about the history of Polish seafaring during the workshops „Spory ten Batory” and about the achievements of Poles in exile during a series of meetings „Polacy brylują, Polki imponują”. Secondary school students will hear stories of daring escapes from communist Poland. All classes will be based on original sources and multimedia.
Depending on the age of the pupils, teachers will be able to choose from among various artistic techniques, motor play activities, simulation exercises, analyses of texts and films or working with maps or tablets. The Museum’s permanent exhibition rooms are also an important educational element for most kindergarten and school workshops, making accessible the history of emigration from Polish territories from the 19th century to modern times. Pupils will be able to acquaint themselves with the exhibition more thoroughly thanks to active tours led by an educator or by completing activity cards with the help of their teachers.
The classes are aimed at groups of 15 to 30 pupils. The workshops last between 60-120 minutes and the active museum tours take 60-90 minutes. Classes take place on Tuesdays and Fridays between 12:00-16:00 and Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10:00-16:00 at the Emigration Museum in Gdynia, 1 Polska Street. The Museum is closed on Mondays. The Museum is accessible to people with motor disabilities.
